Speedwell Volume 1, Issue 1, 3 AM

Putting the finishing polish on Speedwell’s first issue with music and cocktails. Here are the highlights from the last editing session’s playlist: rediscovered favorites, hip-hop, 2000s hits, LCD Soundsystem, Harry Styles, and one unforgettable club scene.

For me, editing a magazine is a lot like organizing a kitchen. You pull everything out, set it on the table and see what you’ve got, then start grouping and putting everything back in the drawers. Maybe that’s the Chef in me, or the Estate Manager – everything has a place, and if it doesn’t, do you really need it? For a hyper-analytical person (or at least this one), quieting down the inner critic to put the finishing polish on our first edition required music and cocktails.

I recently pulled out a decades-old iPod shuffle and copied its contents into my Spotify. The joy of hearing songs that have long since left my heavy rotation sounded like old friends in the room with me and reminded me of being excited about something new and when it didn’t matter if I procrastinated or pulled an all-nighter.

The playlist could have been hours-long, but this was the gist of it. Some hip hop, old and new, LCD Soundsystem, Harry Styles, random 2000’s hits, and the club scene from Heated Rivalry, which has lived rent free in my mind for months.

Let me know if this is something that interests you. This girl loves a mix tape.
