One of motorsport’s most respected photographers spent the 2024 season shooting Le Mans, Formula 1, and IMSA with $10 plastic novelty cameras from the late 90s. The unpredictable images became Racing Unfiltered: A Year in Motorsports Captured on Film, a collection of Jamey Price’s favorite photos from the experiment.

Jamey Price is an award-winning photographer who shoots at the highest echelon of motorsport. He works with the biggest names in the industry: Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Red Bull, among others. And yet, throughout 2024, Jamey shot some of the most notable races in the world with $10 plastic novelty cameras.

Originally sold at NASCAR events in the late 90s as promotional merchandise, the cameras were poorly made, fully automatic, and unpredictable. The only control the photographer has is what film they load and how they frame the shot. Even that turned out to be a bit sketchy as the viewfinder isn’t the same field of view as the lens. Price purchased 15 of them, half of which broke, and ran 80 to 100 rolls of film through the survivors across a season that included the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Formula 1 Grands Prix, IMSA events, and Monterey Car Week.
